At each and every Holy Mass, we find the Holy Eucharist – the Body and Blood of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, together with His Soul and Divinity, under the appearances of bread and wine.
Let me explain.
In Matthew 26:26-28, and Mark 14:22-24, Jesus gave His disciples His Body and Blood. This was at the Last Supper. In another account of the same story – in Luke 22:19 – Jesus adds, “…do this in remembrance of me”, implying that this act wasn’t the last of its kind.
This ‘breaking of bread’, as it was called, continued among the believers after Jesus had ascended into heaven – in many accounts in the book of Acts. A more specific breaking of bread was used in 1 Corinthians 11:23-30. In this passage, the bread and wine are again referred to as the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ (verse 29). The bread and wine weren’t just ‘symbols’; they ACTUALLY BECAME the true Christ’s true Flesh and Blood! This practice has continued till date; its mystery explained to a degree by the Church in her teachings about Transubstantiation.
In the same way our Lord instituted the sacrament of baptism when he said, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Matthew 28:19, He also instituted the sacrament of Holy Eucharist when He said, “DO THIS in memory of me”. Authenticated by Jesus Christ Himself, the Holy Eucharist is neither an invention of the disciples nor of their successors.
Now we know where it came from. And so what? Why is it so important?
John 6:25-59 gives you a complete explanation of all you need to know about the Body of Blood of Christ, and its role in your salvation. O, yes – its MAJOR role! The most interesting part is where Jesus says, “Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.” (Verse 54). Seriously?! Yes. It’s THAT important!
Now to the initial question: is missing Holy Mass a sin?
The answer is YES!
You are not just going against a DIRECT INSTRUCTION from Hebrews 10:23-27; you’re also avoiding the one place which holds the greatest treasure your soul can ever find: Jesus Christ!
This is a sin against God, against His Church, and against your own soul!
I shall, henceforth, make it MANDATORY for me to attend church EVERY WEEK - no excuses; twice, trice, or every day of the week if I can. :)
Jesus loves you.
I tried writing this twice today. I nearly gave up after the second attempt. Thank God I didn’t! Hehe.
I hope you enjoyed it. Comment, share, and pray for my exams papers tomorrow; the last two examinations for Block 2. Yaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyy!!! Lolx.
See you tomorrow. :)
