Let me define my terms first. When I say God, I want you to know that I am referring to The Creator of the heavens and the earth. The very same who is called the I Am That I Am. If you serve Him, you probably know a lot about Him already. Yet, I want to bring some important knowledge - a secret :) - to your understanding, while keeping this short and simple.
The name of God in Hebrew is Yahweh. This name was given by God when He introduced Himself to Moses at the burning bush (Exodus 3:14). The name is a contraction of ehyeh ašer ehyeh, which means "I Am that I Am". He's the interesting part: the contraction, Yahweh, is a compound word itself! It has two parts: Hayah means "existed" or "was" in Hebrew; ehyeh is the first person singular imperfect form and is usually translated in English Bibles as "I am" or "I will be" (or "I shall be").
There are many other names of God in the Bible such as El Shaddai, Elohim... and someday I'll probably give a breakdown of God's names. But right now, Yahweh has blown my mind to bits and pieces and I just want to share it with you.
When you see "was", "am", and "will be" all joined into one name, it corresponds with Hebrews 13:8: "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever". It is also an indication that God does not exist in time. He is the beginning and end; the totality of time! So He knows all things: past, present and future. When God speaks, no matter what He speaks about - even things that have not yet occurred - He is able to speak in the present tense and still be right (Romans 4:17b - "...and calleth those things which be not as though they were"). Lolx. It gets better.
Asides all those cool stuff we learn of God from His name, there are two important take-home lessons.
Firstly, when God says "I Am" to mean "I exist", He says it with such authority as to mean "I alone exist of myself, infinite in all perfections". God does not owe His power or existence to any other being. After all, we were all created by Him. It goes without saying therefore that God is the most competent and most reliable person in whose hands to place your life in.
Secondly, whom God was in the bible is whom He is today. Before He did all that was done through Moses and subsequent prophets, He introduced Himself as Yahweh. This meant that all God did in the Bible were whom He was (Hayah), whom He is (ehyeh), and whom He will be (ehyeh).
Therefore, just as there was healing, mercy, power, grace, forgiveness, providence, guidance, protection, and everything else we read about God in the Bible, all these are still ever present... RIGHT NOW!
So if you're not experiencing the "full" God you read in the Bible, it's time to remind Him of His name and promises.
